Fall Outfit Inspiration for Your Next Family Photoshoot

Fall is almost here! Can you believe that it’s already that time of year again? Time for back to school, pumpkins, leaves...and amazing family portraits! I've had such an amazing summer with my family and I hope you have too, and now I am even more excited to get outdoors. I miss the smells, the laughter when kids play in the leaves, and so much more!

It may seem daunting to even be thinking about getting the whole family together for a session. I get it - as life continues to pick back up, it gets crazy! So look no further for a photographer who can give you exactly what you want, and give needed help every step of the way.

To take one bit of stress away, I’ve shared some simple ideas for members of the whole family that will look fantastic on camera. I hope this list gets you inspired, and excited!

What to wear:

I love jeans for fall sessions, with jewel toned tops thrown in, or really anything other than black, white or red. You can choose one printed article of clothing that you love, and then pull from there. For example, a navy, mustard and rich purple floral dress if you have a dress wearer in the family, and then a lighter blue top on someone, with a navy sweater over it, and a mustard top on someone else with a navy or deep purple accessory (vests, jackets, scarves, etc.). Cotton tops photograph wrinkly; blends usually do much better…. Just make sure you feel comfortable in what you’re wearing. Fitted is better than baggy. :)

Tops:

Long-sleeved, collared shirts are a crisp, clean option for crisp weather! Men and boys will immediately look put together, no matter what else they are wearing.

Bottoms:

Jeans are also a classic, go-to piece for fall. Comfortable and flattering on every member of the family! But don’t forget about the option of dresses or skirts, with leggings to keep warm.

Extended Families:

Try to keep it simple for extended families. For many of us, it's hard enough to find something we feel great in, and finding it in an "assigned" color can be agonizing. I can give your family enough wiggle room that almost anything goes. Creams, brown and jeans can be a unifying base, and then a few other colors can be added in! When I pose you, I'll do my best to compose photographs based on people's heights, which children belong to whom, AND spreading out your colors. The most important thing you can do to prepare is just show up.
